Chews (“the App”) is developed and operated by Dinnertime Labs LLC. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains exactly what the App sends off your device, why, and what we never do.
The Short Version
No accounts. No ads. No data selling. No tracking you across apps. Your favorites and history never leave your phone. The little the App does send — a restaurant search and the occasional crash report — is anonymous: none of it is connected to your name, email, or identity, and we could not identify you from it if we wanted to.
What Stays on Your Device
All of your app data is stored locally on your device:
- Your spin history
- Your favorite restaurants
- Your blacklisted restaurants
- Your filter preferences
- Your theme and display settings
This data is never transmitted to us or anyone else. We cannot access it. Deleting the App deletes it.
Location & Restaurant Searches
The App uses your location for exactly one thing: finding restaurants near you. You can always type a city or zip code instead of granting location access.
When you search, your coordinates (or the city/zip you typed) and your chosen food categories are sent over an encrypted connection to our search service — a proxy we operate on Cloudflare — which forwards the search to Google’s Places API and returns the results. We built this proxy so the App works without embedding API keys on your device.
To keep the App fast and free to run, the proxy caches search results by area — rounded to a grid square roughly 3.5 miles across — for up to 14 days. These cached entries describe an area (“Italian restaurants near this part of town”), not a person: they contain no device identifier, no account, and nothing else about you. We do not keep a log of your individual searches or your exact coordinates.
Google processes restaurant searches under its own privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy
Crash Reports
If the App crashes or hits an unexpected error, an automatic crash report is sent to Sentry, an error-reporting service. A report contains: what went wrong (the error and stack trace), your device model, operating system version, and the App version. That’s it — crash reports are not linked to any account or identity, because none exists.
We do not use usage analytics, session recording, performance tracking, or behavioral profiling. Crash reports exist solely so we can find and fix bugs.
Tips (In-App Purchases)
The App offers optional, voluntary tips processed by Apple’s App Store or Google Play. Apple/Google handle the entire payment — we never see your payment details, card number, or billing information. We use RevenueCat, a purchase-processing service, to confirm that tips go through reliably; it operates under a random anonymous identifier that is not connected to your name, email, or identity.
IP Addresses & Abuse Prevention
Like every internet service, our search service sees your IP address when your device connects to it. We use it for one purpose: short-lived rate-limit counters that protect the service from abuse. These counters are deleted automatically within 24 hours. We do not use IP addresses to identify, profile, locate, or track anyone.
Feedback
The optional in-app feedback form (hosted on Google Forms) sends only what you type, plus the App version and your device model (prefilled so you don’t have to). Including your email is entirely optional.
What We Never Do
- No accounts, sign-ins, or profiles — the App never asks who you are
- No collection of names, emails, phone numbers, or contacts
- No advertisements, advertising SDKs, or tracking pixels
- No selling, renting, or sharing of data for marketing — there is no user data to sell
- No advertising identifiers and no tracking across other apps or websites
Third-Party Services
The App relies on these services, each governed by its own privacy policy:
- Google Places API — restaurant search results and photos (policy)
- Cloudflare — hosts our search proxy (policy)
- Sentry — crash reports (policy)
- RevenueCat — anonymous purchase processing (policy)
- Apple App Store / Google Play — payment processing for tips
- Google Forms — the optional feedback form
Children’s Privacy
The App is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone of any age.
Changes to This Policy
If we update this privacy policy, the revised version will be posted at this URL with an updated date. Since we don’t collect contact information, we can’t notify users directly — but the current policy will always be available here.
